Well, I left work and got into the Conroe store just before 6 PM (they closed at 6:30 pm). I had gone there early last year to buy an Interstate for one of my cars and had a very good experience, so I thought maybe I'd fare better than I did at the Houston store. The Conroe Interstate store is a fairly new one, and also a regional distribution warehouse, and it opened up about 2 years ago. Given that I wasn't 100% happy with my experience at Interstate's All-Battery Store in Houston this morning, I decided to go to the OTHER Interstate All-Battery Store, in the extreme northern Houston suburb of Conroe, TX (which happens to be the next town north of where I live in The Woodlands). After coming out to the parking garage after work, despite having a battery that had been filled with water and driven a 4-5 miles to charge it up a bit, it was still pretty weak, though not as bad as it was this morning and yesterday. Heat is harder on batteries than cold weather is, and because the heat causes the fluid in the battery to evaporate, slowly, it is important that you check your battery's fluid at least once a year and fill it with distilled or purified (bottled) water if needed.įYI Interstate tells me that they now only warranty their batteries for 6 years in hot climates like Houston. is to CHECK YOUR BATTERY WATER at least once a year, and fill it up. a move that I know GSXR will heartily approve of. I actually have half a mind to just get a DieHard Group 48 (equivalent size to Group 91) AGM battery.

If the battery doesn't seem to want to hold a charge to the level that I think it should, then I will return it before the end of August and get the pro-rated MTP-91. If so, it should be good for another year or two. I opted to refill the battery's cells with purified water and give it a couple of days to see if it will hold a stronger charge and give me back some of the lost CCAs. The price for a new MTP-91 is around $145.ĭo note that the MTP-91 (Group 91) is a different (smaller) battery than the MTP-93 (Group 93) that the E500E employs, as well as many MB diesel models. So I had two choices - to fill up the battery with purified/distilled water (bottled drinking water is OK, according to Interstate) or to replace the battery under warranty at the pro-rated rate, which (with tax, installation, and other costs) comes to around $80.

Interstate has a policy with the MTP-91 (I had a receipt of purchase) that batteries can be replaced free of charge for 30 months, and after that are pro-rated based on a pre-existing formula. A visual inspection showed that the battery's plates were exposed and not covered with acid/water. So I went in there on my way to work, driving my wife's car today.Ī quick test of the battery using the Interstate tester showed that the battery was slightly failing. So, I happen to have an Interstate All-Battery Center (company owned store, not a franchised dealer) just a mile or two from my office, and they open at 8 AM. However, it seemed that the battery was not maintaining a charge and was very low on cold-cranking amps (CCAs). With the car running in the driveway, it was 13.8 volts.Īlthough these were anecdotal tests, because I didn't measure the OUTPUT of the alternator to the battery, I was generally able to see that the charging system was working with the near 14 volts at the battery terminals. The battery voltage with the car off, in the driveway, was 12.35 volts.

I too was barely able to get the car started - it was exceedingly slow to crank over. So this started a round of quick experimentation. An enquiry to my wife produced the fact that she was barely able to get the car started, and didn't trust it for errands the rest of the day, so she took my SEC instead. Finally, yesterday I came home from work (had driven the E500 to exercise it) and I noticed my 560SEC was out in the driveway. The last couple of days, I had noticed that the MTP-91 was a bit slow to crank the car over. The battery was some years old, and getting weak, and I didn't want to be stranded out in the AZ desert (we were camping on Federal lands near Gila Bend, AZ) on a freezing cold winter morning with a bad battery.

I got this in Tucson, AZ while I was in the area for a road trip.

About 2.5 years ago, I bought a new Interstate Mega-Tron Plus (MTP-91) battery for my wife's 1995 E320 wagon.
